Talk:Job

Relation to wisdom lit

I thought this comment by HP (you may have to scroll down to it—I think it's the first comment he makes...) was interesting—that Job is sort of a counter-weight to the pithy sayings in the wisdom books which, although oftentimes reveal deep truths, can sometimes be taken be construed in ways that don't address or even ignore the harder realities that occur in life.... --RobertC 02:09, 20 Aug 2006 (UTC)

I see the merit in HP's reading of Job, but I think it reads the rest of Wisdom literature too lightly. Proverbs, for example, seems to me clearly to be about the temple and about temple themes (the father-son discourse it works out might well be something spoken across a veil, certainly is understood as the instruction from one enthroned to one to be enthroned). But his point on Job itself is well-taken: it certainly is an attempt to suggest that there is more than the trite answers, etc. --Joe Spencer 14:38, 21 Aug 2006 (UTC)
