Remnant
Sterling's questions got me thinking about the obduracy/hardening theme of Isa 6:9ff again. Actually, the FPR post on Rom 9:22 (see Related Links there) is probably more to blame. But I don't think we can understand remnant apart from Isaiah and the destruction of the main "tree" that the use of the word entails. The question that I think Paul takes up so seriously in Rom 9-11 seems to open a lot of possibilities about how we should think about all the battles and the general destruction of the Nephites as a people. Paul seems to quote OT examples of election, how God elected Jacob but "hated Esau"--why? Well, I don't think Paul really addresses the why (am I wrong on this?), but he points out scriptural precedent in discussing God's election of the Gentiles (and thus seemingly "hating the Jews" in the same way God hated Esau, although there seems to be less theological problems with hating the Jews b/c they rejected Christ, Esau seems to have been hated in the womb before his works could be judged...).
I have some deep-seated questions about election and grace and the role of Israel vs. the Gentiles. I hope we can explore these issues more through our study of the NT this year and more generally here on the wiki (and the blog). --RobertC 19:36, 6 February 2007 (CET)
