Help:Changing scriptural reference for a commentary page
Each commentary page was created with automated rules. For about every five verses of scriptures, the automated rules created a single commentary. Because of this artibrary division that this automated process resulted in, many verses that naturally fit together are broken across commentary pages in awkward ways. Suppose, for example that the verses in 1 Ne 1:7-11 naturally fit together but the default divisions were 1 Ne 1:5-10, 1 Ne 1:6-10, and 1 Ne 1:11-15. Following the instructions below a user can change the commentary page so that verses 7-11 stay together resulting in 1 Ne 1:1-6, 1 Ne 1:7-11 and 1 Ne 1:12-15. This example is used in the instructions below.
Guidelines/Rules
- Only logged in users can change the verses a commentary page refers to. This rule is technically enforced.
- If you wish to follow the steps below but do not have an account on this site, you will have to create one and log in.
- No commentary page should span more than 9 verses.
- Commentary pages must follow the naming conventions.
- Commentary pages cannot span verses across a chapter. This is really a special case of rule 3 as combining verses from more than one chapter breaks the naming conventions.
- Changing the set of verses a commentary page refers to is a several step process. If you aren't sure you can complete the steps in one setting, do not start.
- Avoid disputes about these types of changes. If you have any reason to think that others may object to your changes ask for comments on the applicable discussion page (aka the talk paga). Don't make the change until there is a general concensus for such. Further, if someone makes a change to the verses a commentary page refers to and you don't like what was done don't change it back until you reach general concensus to do so.
Be careful</h3>
Normally, users are encourage to make the changes they believe will improve the site without too much concern that they might mess something up. That liberal attitude works well for content edits because it is so easy for anyone to revert back to earlier content if others don't agree. However, changing the verses a commentary page refers to is tedious to do and tedious to repair. Because of this improperly changing the verses an article points to is considered a serious blunder because it is difficult for others to fix.
Instructions
We recommend you print these instructions
- Go to the article you want to change. (In the example go to the page 1 Ne 1:6-10).
- Click the "move" tab
- Input the new name for the article. (Type 1 Ne 1:7-11.)
- Click move.
- Type in the name of the original article into the search box. (Type 1 Ne 1:6-10.)
- This should pull up the new article with a link underneath it saying "redirected from (the old article)" (In this example, it would say "redirected from (1 Ne 1:6-10)")
- Click on the link to the old article. (Click on the link 1 Ne 1:6-10 under the title right after the words redirected from.)
- Click on the the link "what links here" on the left navigation underneath the search box
- Follow each link to the page that links to this page. Edit each of those pages and change the reference so that they point directly to the new page. Continue doing this until no more pages are listed as linking to the original article.
- The original article will automatically be set as a redirect to the new article. Leave this set as is.
- Exception: Do not change a redirect to the new page that no longer should redirect to the new page. (In this case you would see 1 Ne 1:6 as a redirect to the old article 1 Ne 1:6-10, but do not change it to a redirect to 1 Ne 1:7-11 since verse 6 is not part of verses 7 to 11. In this case change it to a redirect to the the article (which doesn't yet exist but will shortly) 1 Ne 1:1-6.
- Go to each of the original article's neighbors affected by the change. (In this case we are changing from 6-10 to 7-11 so the article before and the article after are affected by this change.)
- Move each of these articles to the name now apprioriate to them following steps 2-8. (In this case you would move 1 Ne 1:1-5 to 1 Ne 1:1-6 and 1 Ne 1:11-15 to 1 Ne 1:12-15.)
- Finally you may want to search using the search box in the middle of the left navigation for any references to the old articles. Occasionally a reference to the old articles is not shown on the "what links here" page but you can find it by doing a search. (In this case search for 1 Ne 1:1-5; 1 Ne 1:6-10; and 1 Ne 1:11-15).
