I paused this morning as I read this that Nephi explained nothing more about what the TREE is than simply to say to his unbelieving brothers that it is the Tree of Life (v 21-22) and move on to the next question.

It is interesting that when Laman and Lemuel ask about the meaning of the tree, Nephi explained nothing more than to say that it is the Tree of Life (verses 21-22) before moving on to the next question. We know from 1 Ne 11:21-23 that Nephi knew more. There he explains to the angel in detail the meaning of the tree. The fact that he doesn't explain this to his brothers when asked about the tree may suggest that like Nephi, they already knew of its meaning. It seems likely that like Nephi, Laman and Lemuel were also taught in the learning of their father (1 Ne 1:1) and also knew of the manner of prophesying among the Jews (2 Ne 21:1).

This tells me that they had training (Primary Lessons?) on the meaning of the Tree of Life because Nephi knew enough about the Tree to explain to the Angel what it means in detail.  In 1 Ne. 11:21-23, he says the Tree of Life is a representation of the Love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things.

To which, the angel answers, Yea, and the most joyous to the soul. (1 Ne. 11:23), which I think is a very fitting extension of that definition given the vision of Christ that Nephi is seeing as he recounts this!

Exegesis
