I paused this morning as I read this that Nephi explained nothing more about what the TREE is than simply to say to his unbelieving brothers that it is the Tree of Life ([http://scriptures.lds.org/1_ne/15/21-22#21 v 21-22]) and move on to the next question.

This tells me that they had training (Primary Lessons?) on the meaning of the Tree of Life because Nephi knew enough about the Tree to explain to the Angel what it means in detail.  In [http://scriptures.lds.org/1_ne/11/21-23#21 1 Ne. 11:21-23], he says the Tree of Life is a representation of ''the Love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things.''

To which, the angel answers, ''Yea, and the most joyous to the soul.'' ([http://scriptures.lds.org/1_ne/11/23#23 1 Ne. 11:23]), which I think is a very fitting extension of that definition given the vision of Christ that Nephi is seeing as he recounts this!
