Remember the Covenant

This is how I am going to approach this lesson.

Next week is super bowl Sunday. There are some issues connected with this day. It is considered the end of the eating season that begins on Halloween. The first issue has to do with hunger and the fact that American’s eat more than on any day other than Thanksgiving. A total of approximately 156 billion calories will be absorbed by the perhaps 130 million people. That could feed a lot of starving people.

The second has to do with domestic violence. In 1993 someone issued a report that claimed there is more domestic violence on super bowl Sunday than any other day of the year. The fact checkers began looking into the situation and found that no one could be found who would admit to having said such a thing. In 2003 IU at Bloomington prepared a report that compared statistics from various cities and concluded that super bowl Sunday isn’t significantly more violent than any other holiday.

Today we are going to talk about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. How can the Book of Mormon possibly address 21st century issues?

What issues come to mind when you think about the manner in which the book came to us?

Read JSH 1:28-29. What was Joseph praying for? What was his issue?

Read JSH 1:50. Can we draw any conclusions or learn any lessons from the relationship between Joseph and his father?

Read JSH 53-54. Was there a purpose in withholding the plates?

Are any of these themes repeated in the Doctrine & Covenants? If so, which ones? Are there any new issues?

What do sections 3, 5, 10, and 17 tell us about the following? 1. Worthiness (3:8-10, 5:25-28) 2. Preparation (3:4-9) 3. Fear of men (10:36) 4. God’s character (3:2) 5. Dealing with the world (10:28)

Conclusion: D & C 84:54-58 It is essential to study the Book of Mormon and to incorporate its teachings into our lives.
